Gom Jabbar is the solo project of Scottish musician Joseph Edward Kelly, whom you may know from his talented main band, the fierce death metal outfit Penny Coffin, a project literally anchored in its most primitive, gritty and visceral essence that could easily have emerged in the late eighties from the same breeding ground as true legends like Winter, Disembowelment, Necro Schizma or the gods Lord of Putrefaction, but is now doing so, in the midst of the 21st century, to remind us that doom metal can (and should) sound damn rough, unhealthy and abrasive...
As you’ll see, we're dealing with a truly awe-inspiring project, where the primal and primitive death doom metal we were talking about earlier is taken to the extreme with an absolutely abrasive and distorted production, layered with noise, industrial sounds, featuring hypnotic atmospheric passages loaded with spectral samples and vocal lines that push the boundaries of extremity, depraved and utterly corrupted...
This collection of demos, presented under the title “Obsidian Black Carrion”, gathers the first three rituals of Gom Jabbar, three true alchemical transmutations of highly personal death doom metal deeply rooted in the old and rugged sound of masters like Disembowelment, Old Funeral or (early) Morgion, with striking experimental touches reminiscent of Portal, Encoffination or Spectral Voice...

A grand display that's equally gorgeous and grotesque! Churning, writhing rhythms lay the groundwork for caustic, venomous vocals and discordant melodies that remind me of a death metal version of Blut Aus Nord. One of 2023's best metal albums! Turd Ferguson

Grabbed this on Bandcamp whilst watching it being played live at The Dome. Tears welled up as the final crescendo peaked and had it been the end of my cycle, I would have happily spontaneously combusted, I then realised it was only dawn and the first of the triptych, so I will soldier on, at least until dusk and endure another two stellar opus’s before I can embark on that final journey.
