So glad I discovered this project! Though I enjoy Demo 2 quite a lot more, Demo 1 is really solid and sets the foundation for the sound's expansion to be witnessed on Demo 2 and Urchig. I feel myself walking by this abandoned hut in the woods, merely lit by the stars above me, while paralyzing my respiratory passages with the icy air.

This was truly a revelation. I was getting started with funeral doom, working on something with my headphones on... Then came Déluge... my jaw actually dropped, I stopped what I was doing and, wide-eyed, just listened to the track, baffled and amazed. After the album was over (I never do this), I went to lay down with my headphones to enjoy it over again. I rarely heard (and felt) this much power and emotion in an album. Until I find something better, this is my landmark for peak funeral doom.

This is an enchanting album that really transports us to the funereal and sentimental romanticism of the late 18th and 19th century through the excellent instrumental atmosphere, ethereal vocals, classical instruments and the unprecedented addition of distorted bass that replaces the guitars. The poetry of the lyrics is intense. Obsequies is highly recommended to all goth and doom lovers.

Atavist's first album after reforming is a funeral-doom inflected slab of melancholic death doom that explores loss and absolution. Sometimes gentle and reflective, othertimes crushingly heavy, this is quality doom metal.
